Mockup Automator suite › Auto Upscaler

Auto Upscaler

Brings a folder of undersized images up to print resolution. Pick the size you are printing at and it enlarges anything that will not reach it, leaves anything that already does, and never crops or reshapes a picture in the process.

First 10 exports free on the direct download, full plugin, no card required. Adobe Exchange copies are full price from install.

How do you upscale images for printing in Photoshop?

Enlarge the file so its longer edge reaches the pixel count your print size needs at 300 dpi, without cropping or changing its shape. Images already big enough are left alone rather than resampled.

  1. Pick the folder holding your images.
  2. Pick an output folder.
  3. Choose the target print size.
  4. Optionally switch to the AI method, then Run.

Auto Upscaler

  • Up only, never down

Images already big enough for the target are passed through untouched, with their resolution normalised to 300 dpi. Nothing is ever thrown away to hit a number.

  • Shape is never changed

The target is written as width × height in centimetres, but only the longer of the two actually drives the scale. Your aspect ratio survives exactly as it was — there is no crop step in this plugin at all.

  • Target size eleven presets and custom

    A4, A3, 36 × 28, A2, A1, 60 × 90, 75 × 100, A0, 80 × 120, 90 × 120 and 150 × 100 cm, or type your own. The panel tells you the pixel target it is working to.

  • Method two engines

Preserve Details works on every supported version of Photoshop. Deep Upscale uses Photoshop's newer AI enlargement where it is available, and falls back on its own if it is not.

Four steps, start to finish

Point the plugin at the folder your images are in, point it at where you want the results, pick a size, and hit Run. Everything after that is the plugin's job.

The Auto Upscaler panel annotated with four numbered steps: pick your Artwork folder, pick your Output folder, pick your size, and hit Run. A fifth note marks the optional Deep Upscale AI method.
Two folders, a size, and Run. Deep Upscale (AI) is optional.
The Auto Upscaler panel with the target size dropdown open, showing presets including 75 by 100 cm, A0, 80 by 120 cm, 90 by 120 cm, 150 by 100 cm, 50 by 150 cm and a custom option.
Eleven presets plus custom, so a whole folder comes out at one consistent print size.

The same three buttons as every plugin in the suite

Learn one and you have learned the rest. Auto Upscaler is a single panel in Photoshop with folder pickers at the top, settings in the middle, and Scan, Run and Stop at the bottom — runs locally in your own copy of Photoshop, and can skip files already sitting in the output folder.

Who needs to upscale images for print?

Anyone selling a print larger than the file was shot for. A 150 by 100 cm canvas at 300 dpi wants roughly 17,700 pixels on the long edge, which is more than most cameras and far more than most stock or archive files.

Print sellers offering large sizes

The biggest sizes are the most profitable and the most likely to be short on resolution.

Photographers with older files

Work shot on earlier cameras is still sellable, just not at the sizes it needs to be.

Sellers of scanned or vintage artwork

Scans of paintings and archive prints rarely come in at print resolution.

Print-on-demand sellers

The platform rejects anything under its minimum, so files have to be brought up before upload.
